My family and I travel while I run my company Purveyor of Geekery
I caught up with Melissa this week, who makes the most adorable eco-friendly child activity travel bags and offers them through her shop The Little Blue Birdie … because I HAD TO! No, seriously, wait until you see these fantastic bags. First though: meet Melissa and Family!
Look at those Baby Blues! What a little heartbreaker. 🙂
IHFT: What inspires your choice of materials and colors for your bags? What inspires the toys themselves?
LBB: I wanted to find materials that were as natural and Eco-friendly as possible. I also knew I wanted the bags to be washer friendly as well as light enough to carry in a purse or diaper bag. I wanted the colors and prints to be fun and different and to work with any age.
As for the actual toys, I wanted to keep them simple and open ended. I wanted the child playing with them to find many uses for each one, keeping them engaged and busy. For example, my daughter uses the matching game not only to match the designs but also stacks and builds with them, spins them and pretends they are treasure!
IHFT: Other than your activity bags, What are some of your own travel accessory must haves?
LBB: We do a lot of car traveling and have just recently potty trained our daughter so we love our travel potty chair by Cool Gear. It is a lifesaver when on the road. I also love using Snack Traps for all of my daughters snacks while traveling. I fill a bunch up with different snacks and don’t have to worry about a mess in the car.
IHFT: Favorite family travel memory?
LBB: Last winter we took my daughter up to Vermont . It was her first time in mountains and really being able to go sledding. It was such a simple vacation but such a fun time for our family.
IHFT: Favorite travel destination? Favorite travel keepsake?
LBB: My husband and I went to Zihuatanejo, Mexico a few years ago and absolutely loved it. It is a great little fishing town located along a beautiful crescent shaped beach. I still have so many beautiful pieces of sea glass that I collected from the beach.
IHFT: Best keep your sanity while traveling with kids tip?
LBB: Be prepared!! I always make sure I have enough stuff packed to keep my daughter busy. I always throw something new into her activity bag that I know will keep her interest. Nothing works better in the middle of a travel meltdown then a new toy or activity that you can just pull out of your purse.
IHFT: What other ways do you, personally stay prepared while traveling other than thwarting tantrum monsters?
LBB: The way I personally stay prepared while traveling is to be as organized as possible. I am a huge list maker and like to do as much as possible days we actually travel. The more organized I am the smoother the actual day of travel goes. I will keep a folder in the car with, directions printed out as well as hotel info, tickets, good restaurants etc.
